ABC ID & DEB ID Explained: Meaning, Purpose and IGNOU Linkage

Full Form: Academic Bank of Credits ID

It’s a unique ID issued under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that allows students to digitally store and transfer academic credits between different institutions in India.

Key Points:

  • Created on the DigiLocker platform (https://www.digilocker.gov.in).
  • Helps in credit transfer, especially if you move between universities or want to combine courses.
  • IGNOU students are required to create an ABC ID to link their academic records.
  • Format: usually an alphanumeric ID like ABC1234567890.

How to Create:

  1. Visit 👉 https://abc.gov.in
  2. Sign in with your DigiLocker account (Aadhaar linked).
  3. Generate your ABC ID.
  4. Submit this ABC ID on IGNOU’s portal (during admission or re-registration).

DEB ID (Distance Education Bureau ID)

Full Form: Distance Education Bureau ID
Purpose:
This is not an individual student ID, but rather an institutional code assigned by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB) under UGC to universities like IGNOU.

Key Points:

  • It identifies the approval status of programs offered through distance learning.
  • Each program/course that IGNOU offers under ODL (Open and Distance Learning) has a DEB approval number or reference ID.
  • Students don’t need to create or submit a DEB ID — it’s used officially by IGNOU for recognition and reporting.
